6 Things You Could be Doing Wrong When Mystery Shopping

Mystery shopping is one of the easiest jobs in the world. All you have to do is shop in a particular establishment, secretly record details according to the shopping guidelines, work up a good report, and accept payment.

That said, there are still instances when people fail to do it successfully, and it’s usually because they aren’t completing each task as they should.  To give you an idea of the various ways your mystery shopping could wrong, here are six common pitfalls that you should be aware of:

  1. Becoming obvious during a mystery shopping visit. The job clearly states that it is a mystery or a secret shopping task, so why be obvious about it?  There are secret shoppers who act obvious or unusual, and as a result, the employees act unusually as well, so it doesn’t end up being a good indication of how a store operates.  When a mystery shopper is obvious, employees put their best foot forward because they can usually figure out that someone was hired to watch them. When you mystery shop, try to keep it a secret and act as you would if you were an unpaid customer.
  2. Failure to follow the guidelines. If you failed to follow the instructions of your job, would a company still want to hire you? Of course not.  Any job has certain guidelines to which an employee is expected to adhere.  If you don’t follow the instructions for your task, you could easily ruin the market study that the company is conducting. Follow every small detail of instructions because they are important.
  3. Constant cancellation of assignments. Frequently cancelling your assignments damages your status as a mystery shopper, and no company will want to hire you. Being a mystery shopper also requires professionalism, and constantly cancelling is not professional.
  4. Accepting too many assignments. It’s great to take on more jobs…as long as you can keep up with all of them and submit the required reports with quality and on time.  Accepting more assignments than you can manage will not only be stressful, but you will create a bad reputation for yourself if you begin providing poor quality reports and cancelling assignments.  Know your limitations!
  5. Delayed submissions and missing deadlines. The companies that hire you are in the fast lane, and they want fast, excellent output from you.  Even if a company accepts a delayed submission, that doesn’t mean they will hire you again.
  6. Poor reporting.  Companies that hire mystery shoppers expect to be working with professionals, and mediocre performance is not acceptable.  So, be professional in what you do and submit a reports that are as comprehensive and high quality as possible.
