Widen Your Mystery Shopping Market Reach

Working as a freelance secret shopper can offer great benefits. You manage your own time and schedule; you personally search for and deal with each company; and you get to take home all of the profits.  However, there may be times when the number of companies that hire mystery shoppers are limited. Only select companies work with freelance secret shoppers, and most of the time, they choose to hire shoppers through a reliable mystery shopping company because they want to know they’re hiring someone who is experienced and reliable and who will give them the best quality for their money.

That said, given the fact that mystery shopping is already an unconventional line of work that offers a lot of freedom, connecting with a mystery shopping company can provide you with much greater benefits than if you try to simply work on your own.  Here are a few reasons why:

  • You will have greater market reach. A mystery shopping company has access to a number of companies that frequently hire mystery shoppers, so you can work with more companies and increase your profits. They have already established a working relationship with these companies, which means you don’t have to spend time making connections, but rather can begin enjoying regular assignments immediately.
  • You can maximize your profit. Though you may be receiving 100% of the profits when you freelance, your limited access to companies means that assignments are less frequent. However, by working with a mystery shopping company, you have many more opportunities to work and, therefore, maximize your profits by taking a little less on a lot more deals.
  • You can get referrals. Companies searching for mystery shoppers often seek referrals from mystery shopping companies. Establishing yourself professionally will give you a greater chance of being referred to companies more frequently.
  • You have better access to information on how you can become a more effective mystery shopper. More often than not, mystery shopping companies provide tips and information to their secret shoppers that can be very useful in accomplishing their tasks.  When you apply that and become good at what you do, you receive more assignments.

While mystery shopping offers a more flexible working lifestyle, it is still important to be willing to receive all the help you can get and work with others. Working with a mystery shopping company will allow you to maintain that flexible work schedule, while also guaranteeing you a more successful secret shopping career in the short and long terms.

  1. Steve Keil says:

I’m not sure if the distinction you are making between working freelance and working for a mystery-shopping company. I thought most all mystery shoppers were independent contractors, and wee therefore freelance. Or do I not have a clue?

    • Steve, you are correct – independent contractors and freelance workers are one and the same. What the article was referring to is that few CLIENT companies (those that hire mystery shopping companies) rarely work with freelancers directly and would prefer to work with them through a mystery shopping company (who, of course, hires freelance or independent shoppers). Does that help clear up the confusion?
