Mystery Shopping Resolutions – How to Make 2017 a Profitable Year

new-year-resolutionWith the start of a new year, we all tend to make resolutions that seem to fall to the wayside by January 15 or so. Why not resolve to make 2017 be different, especially when it comes to your mystery shopping business.

In his book, Good to Great, author Jim Collins tells us, “At the heart of those rare and truly great companies was a corporate culture that rigorously found and promoted disciplined people to think and act in a disciplined manner.”

Look at your life, your mystery shopping business, and any other arena in which you might dabble. See where you might become more disciplined in your actions and planning – and move yourself to greatness.

  • Are you signed on with all the companies you can be working for?
  • Do you search the company websites for available assignments in areas to which you might be driving – therefore saving on gas and making the most of each trip?
  • Do you carefully read and follow all instructions from your schedulers in order to not have your pay reduced or not get paid at all?
  • Do you treat your mystery shopping as a true business, taking time to record mileage, expenses, etc., to be ready for tax time and take advantage of the tax breaks available to you?
  • Do you participate in on line groups on Facebook and LinkedIn, forums such as Volition or Mystery Shop Forum to read and be part of what is going on in the industry?
  • Have you considered membership in MSPA-NA or attending a mystery shopping conference this year?

If you have some down time during this holiday season, make sure you are taking advantage of all the ways you can make your mystery shopping business more profitable.

You may consider yourself an independent contractor – but you are also a business owner.

To achieve what it is you desire, planning is of utmost importance. Being disciplined does not mean that you need to be severely structured – but to keep your eye on your goal and take steps toward it every day.

Make lists, act daily, and move toward having a profitable mystery shopping business in 2017.

In New Jersey the gas tax increased the cost of doing business. Accordingly, choosing just one assignment and relying on that for profit has become more difficult. Putting together a profitable road trip requires a sharp pencil or a calculator (who uses pencils anymore?)

My volume of shops have declined considerably over the past year as more clients require that I take pictures. While pictures are valuable to some clients the quality is in the eye of the beholder and attempting to take a quick picture may blur the image. Checking the picture and retaking the picture may increase the probability of being revealed.

I caution shoppers NOT TO BE SCAMMED by the pizza and gas station/convenience store shops and be careful not to drop your camera/phone into the toilet.

Hope Santa brings you shops that make you go HO HO HO!

A happy New Year to all from Dave the Shopper.

    • Thanks for your insight Dave. With every assignment, shoppers need to assess the current costs and time involved. Expenses and requirements change over time and the mystery shopping companies do try to account for this in our payments. As independent contractors, shoppers do have the ability to choose what works best for them… which is what most people do enjoy about mystery shopping. Happy New Year to you too!
